Before we get started, here are some interesting facts about Mardi Gras.

  • Mardi Gras officially starts on January 6 with what is known as Epiphany or the Twelfth Night and extends until Fat Tuesday, which is the day before Ash Wednesday, February 17.
  • The period from January 6 to February 17 is known as Carnival Season.
  • “Mardi Gras” translates to Fat Tuesday, which traditionally is the final day of feasting before the fasting of Lent.
  • The three main colors of Mardi Gras are purple, symbolizing justice; green, symbolizing faith; and gold, symbolizing power.
  • Each year, the city of New Orleans chooses the King of the Carnival to receive the symbolic keys to the city.
  • The official dessert of Mardi Gras is the King Cake, which is a brioche-like cake with a baby hidden inside, and whoever finds the baby will have good luck in the coming year.

While Milwaukee may participate in the celebration on a different level than New Orleans, there are plenty of local events and festivities to enjoy. That is, if you know what’s happening and where to find it. Allow us to guide you to Carnival this year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mardi Gras may mean Fat Tuesday to most. However, the festivities begin the weeks leading up to it. We will showcase events throughout the city that will offer a new perspective on what it means to celebrate Mardi Gras.
