Did you know that there are two Potawatomi Casino Hotels in Wisconsin? Located about three hours and 202 miles apart, Potawatomi Casino Hotel Milwaukee and Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel are two destinations operated by the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe. These two properties have been around for over thirty years and have a rich history of bingo, expansion, and giving back to the community. Read on to learn more about these two exceptional properties and why both are worth a visit.
If you’re from the Milwaukee area, you’re probably familiar with Potawatomi Casino Hotel, which opened its doors in 1991. The Forest County Potawatomi purchased land in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley in 1990 to build a bingo hall. On March 7, 1991, Potawatomi Bingo became the first off-reservation casino in the country and is still the only one of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. (Want to learn more about the history of Potawatomi Casino Hotel? Then visit our About page to learn the rich history of the Forest County Potawatomi tribe and Potawatomi Casino Hotel.) The bingo hall was met with enthusiasm, and slot machines were quickly added in 1992. Continued popularity made room for a three-story expansion in 2000, followed by a 381-room hotel in 2014 with an additional 119 rooms in the spring of 2019. For a total of 500 hotel rooms!
The casino floor from 1990 to today looks a little different. After an almost $200 million renovation, Potawatomi Casino Hotel Milwaukee updated everything from the flooring and aesthetic to adding new restaurants and a new gaming experience for guests. Including the first-ever Sportsbook that offers TV hosts, influencers, and sportscasters alike the opportunity to record onsite in a state-of-the-art studio.
Potawatomi Casino Hotel has been a very prosperous venture for the tribe and an economic driver for Milwaukee and the surrounding areas. Still, it definitely isn’t the tribe’s only successful casino in Wisconsin. Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel is much closer to their reservation in Northeast WI, just over a three-hour drive from their first Wisconsin casino. This casino is located in Carter, WI, and, like its sister property in Milwaukee, started as a bingo hall in 1991. After a successful introduction to the Northwoods, the property expanded in 1992 by adding slot machines and table games.
Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel continued to grow over the next two decades by expanding its gaming floor, adding conference centers, and constructing a 98-room hotel to complete the getaway destination it is today. Camping and outdoor activities are big in the Northwoods, and at Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel, they get that, so during camping season, they have RV parking for guests to utilize. The best part? If you park your RV at Carter, you can access all the hotel amenities such as the pool, hot tub, and fitness center.
In 2025, Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel completed the hotel renovations on all hotel rooms, giving them a gorgeous update with new flooring, fixtures, and more for guests to enjoy. Also unique to the Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel property are the two Rock & Brew Suites. These suites were designed and crafted with musicians and music enthusiasts in mind. From the guitar neck door handles to the in-room fireplace, this room is Rock and roll heaven.
Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel has continued to grow and develop over the last few years and recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of Rock & Brews. Rock & Brews is part of the legendary Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons restaurant chain, which is featured in casinos all over the country and has found a home in the Northwoods. This lively update allows guests to listen to live music while still enjoying a great meal, playing their favorite games, and visiting with friends.
In addition to this incredible accomplishment, Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel also renovated its bingo hall into an indoor smoking gaming area that features more than 80 slot machines, a beverage station, and state-of-the-art air filtration. To keep the rest of the casino smoke-free, Potawatomi Carter Casino installed an air-locked entrance to ensure that all guests can enjoy the casino. This new space gives our smoking guests the option to keep playing and enjoying their time without having to leave the casino.
Each location integrates with its community to bring the best experience to its guests. In Milwaukee, this means that guests can catch the Potawatomi Street Team at select Brewers or Bucks games. In Carter, they’ve hosted car shows and events in their conference rooms. At Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel, guests will occasionally be able to earn promotional items for Milwaukee, such as Summerfest tickets or tickets to a Brewers game.
From starting as a bingo hall in 1990 to becoming an entertainment destination in Wisconsin, Potawatomi Casino Hotel Milwaukee and Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel should be on your casino tour bucket list
