Cream City History

Where did Milwaukee’s nickname “The Cream City” come from?

Milwaukee was dubbed “The Cream City” in the middle 19th century due to the extensive use of locally produced cream-colored brick in Milwaukee area buildings. The brick was exported nationally and internationally, eventually earning the name “cream city brick.”

Are cream city brick buildings still in Milwaukee?

Yes, there are many cream city brick buildings still in use across the city of Milwaukee. Just look for older buildings with light, cream-colored brick façades.
